So far it's been an exciting fall, with some unexpected
pleasures. In October, Nelson Hiu and I had the honor
of performing with Hideo Ikegami (double bass) in a
mesmerizing set of improvisations at Visage. Hideo is
a master of pure improvisation who makes his home
in Tokyo. I hope to collaborate with Hideo-san again
in the near future. |

And this past week I had the great pleasure of performing Canadian composer/trombonist
Darren Sigesmund's music along with Darren and David Braid on the piano and Joao
Silvestre on drums. We performed concerts at Hong Kong University and Poly-U as well
as at the Nanjing Jazz Festival. It was a wonderful experience, the first of what I hope will
be many future collaborations.

"The Magic Meeting" - The Four Degrees (new jazz)
A contemporary jazz conversation between East and East. New York tenor man
Bruce Huron trades soaring lines and mixes riffs with the best of the down-under
crowd. The horns fly in taut formation with a searing bass and drums rhythm
section. A lively excursion through the tangled undergrowth of urban
improvisation -no hackneyed old standards to be found here. New, fresh,
original, exciting!
|
 |
Bruce Huron and Peter Scherr have been musical comrades for more than twenty years.
New York-based Huron, who is on the cutting edge of improvised music, is creating
an all-new program, which will make the most of the wide-open two horns format. Scherr,
who is on a path to meet the best and the brightest of improvised music from many
nations, has assembled a super crew for these upcoming shows, including top
Portuguese drummer Joao Silvestre, and Melbourne's rising star Toby Mak on trumpet.
